October 3-9, 2006 A wonderful Family visit and vacation!
Aunt Patti, Gram Bev, Aunt Karen and Uncle Eric all arrived in the wee hours of the morning. Their first day in the lovely Apex, NC was spent just getting over any jet lag and doing a bit of driving around the local area. That evening we had a party as it was Aunt Patti's birthday. Gram Bev had her birthday a few days prior, so they both we honored to wear the lovely birthday hats. The next morning we were off to Carolina Beach, near Wilmington. They thought we were kidding when we said that there are no sites to see on the 2 1/2 hour drive other than trees...well, I think they now know we weren't. We had a great time at the beach. It was very relaxing and just perfect weather. We did plenty of boogie boarding, even Gram Bev. We also collected sea shells and Baker went swimming every chance he was given.
Friday morning we received a call on our cell phone from a friend asking us if we were able to evacuate. I said, "Huh? I don't see any clouds. Is there a hurricane coming?" She said, "Huh? Where are you?" I let her know we were at the beach and then she said, "Well that is good, because there was a big chemical waste plant explosion in Apex last night and everyone had to evacuate." Anyway, we turned on CNN and found that it was nation wide news. We received a some calls from concerned friends and family, but we were A OK. We couldn't have planned the trip at a better time. We missed the explosion by a day and we returned home 1 day after they began allowing people back into Apex.
Happy Birthday Aunt Patti and Gram Bev!
